Angove's family cellar in South Australia was named 'Winery of the Year 2008' by Peter Forrestal's wine guide Quaff. Peter writes of them Angove's is the deserved winner of our Winery of the Year Award ... their performance over the past twelve months has been exemplary. The cellar has been making outstanding wines now for five generations ... since Dr William Angove emigrated with his family from Cornwall in 1886. He initially set up a medical practice and just kept grape growing and winemaking as a hobby. Gradually he was seduced away from medicine into the wine business. Brandy was their first speciality and they still do make a few award winning spirits but wine is now the main thrust. The family specialise in unusual grapes 19 varieties in total many of which John Angove planted as experiments in the 1970s and 1980s. Now with 20 30 years of maturity these rarities are coming into fashion much to his delight. White Grenache is indigenous to the southern Rhone where it makes weighty rounded wines like the much sought after white Chateauneuf du Pape. In Australia it's unusual to find but lends a roundness and gentle stony melon fruit. Angove's White Grenache is particularly full in flavour as its vines were planted over 25 years ago.
